Victoria leaf collection starts October 19: find your zone’s start date
City of Victoria leaf collection starts October 19 in James Bay, Fairfield, Rockland and Gonzales. Other neighbourhood groups start later. A start date is not a guaranteed pickup day: crews expect three to four weeks per zone and give flood-prone areas priority.

Get the pile ready for your neighbourhood’s turn
A Fairfield leaf pile and a Fernwood leaf pile do not have the same collection start. Find your neighbourhood in the table, then put leaves where crews can see and reach them. You are preparing for a pass through the zone, which can take weeks, rather than booking a truck to stop outside on one morning.

The 2026 zone dates
The City’s October 14 announcement gives two start dates for each group. Crews need about three to four weeks to complete a zone. Weather can change the work order and areas prone to flooding come first. Keep piles ready by the zone start rather than reading the table as an appointment for one house.
| Neighbourhood group | First start | Second start |
|---|---|---|
| James Bay, Fairfield, Rockland, Gonzales | October 19 | December 7 |
| Jubilee, Fernwood, Oaklands, Hillside Quadra | November 9 | December 21 |
| North Park, Burnside, Victoria West, Downtown | November 30 | January 4 |

Put leaves where crews can reach them
Pile leaves on the grassy boulevard ahead of the start date. If there is no grassy boulevard, the City says to keep the pile on your property near the road edge. Make it visible and reachable from the street, away from trees, poles, signs and hydrants. Bags are optional for neighbourhood collection, but must be clear if used.
The benefit is two neighbourhood passes without needing to drive the leaves away. The limit is a weather-dependent service rather than a fixed pickup date. The announcement also links drop-off and bagged-pickup options. Do not copy a 2023 commenter’s green-bin or mulch solution as a checked rule for every current Victoria property.

First check which municipality serves the address
A February 2023 VictoriaBC Reddit leaf-collection question was actually about Saanich. Replies corrected the idea that CRD handled the service and described frustration with delays. That distinction matters now: this guide covers the City of Victoria, not all Greater Victoria addresses. Do not use these dates for a Saanich home.

Keeping leaves and clearing access can both matter
A November 2025 Victoria discussion divided over the idea of leaving fallen leaves in place. Some readers liked using them in garden beds or compost and disliked blower noise. Others focused on slippery sidewalks, wheelchair access and blocked drains. Several made the useful distinction between leaves in a garden and leaves on a walking surface. Those views help explain why the collection instructions say where to put a pile, rather than simply asking residents to move leaves out of sight.
The older Saanich collection thread adds another lesson: a delay can feel like a missed service when a resident reads the start date as their pickup day. Victoria’s announcement explicitly gives crews three to four weeks per zone and prioritizes flood-prone areas. Read the dates as the beginning of a pass, not a booking for the truck to reach your house that morning.

Get the pile ready without creating another blockage
For a Fairfield address, the first zone start is October 19 and the second is December 7. For a Fernwood address, those starts are November 9 and December 21. Those examples show why the neighbourhood matters more than a general social-media reminder that collection has begun somewhere in the city.
Look at the pile from the street side. Can crews see and reach it without a tree, sign or hydrant in the way? Is it on the grassy boulevard, or on your own property near the road edge if no grassy boulevard exists? Keep it out of the route water takes towards a drain. The City says its annual programme collects about 7,000 tonnes and turns the material into mulch for parks and community programmes. Preparing a reachable pile helps that service work without making the road or pavement harder to use.
