Redlen Technologies is a pioneering company that has revolutionized the semiconductor crystal growth and fabrication process.
At Redlen Technologies, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our founder's visionary work with the Canadian Space Agency laid the foundation for our groundbreaking Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) sensors, revolutionizing medical imaging, security imaging, and non-destructive testing. We are driving a quantum leap forward in medical CT scanners, elevating diagnostic accuracy while reducing radiation dose– a technological feat that has earned us global recognition. With a commitment to excellence, we have earned the trust of Fortune 500 industry customers, leading to our acquisition by Canon Inc. for $430M– a testament to our industry leadership.
With over 200 dedicated professionals, we take pride in fostering a work environment where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professionals thrive. As an equal opportunity employer we demonstrate that diversity drives innovation, and we are passionate about building a future where every employee contributes to our mission-driven success. Redlen's teams, mirroring the multifaceted diversity of Canadian society, exemplify our commitment to leveraging a wide range of ideas and backgrounds as a driving force for innovation, business excellence, and pioneering advancements in STEM.
As part of the multi-disciplinary Manufacturing Automation team, the successful candidate will focus on the demonstration & development of automation hardware solutions for inline metrology, inspection, test & handling of Redlen’s CZT X-Ray Sensors and imaging modules. The candidate should possess expertise in electromechanical design, machine vision and manufacturing systems to ensure scalable throughput, precision inspection and safe material handling in a semiconductor production environment.
This is a high-impact, high-ownership role where you’ll work across robotics, machine vision, fixturing and factory systems to bring production-worthy automation online quickly. You’ll operate in an environment with evolving requirements, dynamic timelines, and the opportunity to shape the manufacturing platform from first principles.
The role will work cross-functionally with process engineering, facilities engineering, controls and software teams to deliver robust, scalable automation solutions that improve yield, capacity, and operational efficiency.
This is a hands-on role at our Saanichton production facility with the majority of working time onsite. Working conditions include use of PPE in a production facility, lifting and standing for extended periods of time.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with the automation team to establish high-level system requirements for automated inline inspection & CZT sensor handling systems.
- Collaborate with process engineers to understand current process limitations, define inspection criteria, handling requirements and workflows.
- Develop or work with external systems integrators for precision semiconductor sensor handling and machine vision applications (e.g., wafer stages, sensor pick-and-place, robotic handling, inline defect detection).
- Lead the selection and evaluation & of machine vision systems (2D/3D cameras, lighting, optics). This can include in-house designed systems for production or evaluation.
- Lead activities for the selection & evaluation of wafer and sensor end effectors used for automated Pick & Place applications.
- Take ownership of Redlen’s 6-axis robotic test bench to design & execute internal demonstrations for CZT handling, machine vision inspection & other proof-of-concept demonstrations.
- Co-develop Design-of-Experiments to prove out and de-risk automation hardware and workflows to assess impacts on process yield & throughput.
- Execution of electromechanical designs for automation projects utilizing SolidWorks and other design tools.
- Co-lead system integration with the automation team controls engineer including FAT/SAT and bring-up of inspection and CZT handling tools – internally or externally developed.
- Complete documentation packages to support design activities & commissioning.
Collaborate broadly with other Redlen teams of mechanical, electrical and process engineers.
What makes this role different:
- You will design systems that don’t exist yet
- You will wear multiple hats: mechatronics engineer, system integrator, robot owner and problem solver
- You will have direct impact on production ramp and company success
- You will work in high ambiguity environment with evolving specs - not fully defined processes
Experience Required:
- 5–8+ years of experience in manufacturing automation engineering in a high-tech / electromechanical assembly, manufacturing or semiconductor environment.
- Demonstratable experience across a range of mechatronics specialties – mechanical design, DFM, optics, motion control, electrical design.
- Familiarity or exposure with machine vision / optical systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Halcon, OpenCV).
- Hands-on experience with system commissioning, debugging, and troubleshooting.
- Extensive demonstrated experience in mechanical design concepts, mechatronics & CAD Tools (Solidworks, AutoCAD)
- Exposure to robotic systems & programming is considered a plus (FANUC, Kuka, UR).
Skills/Additional Requirements:
- Strong attention to detail & quality.
- Support & drive cross-functional collaboration in the projects
- Hands – On approach to problem solving, getting your hands dirty on the MFG floor regularly.
- Exhibit a bias toward action balanced by strong analytical decision-making skills.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, systems engineering or an equivalent combination of education & work experience.
Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000 CAD
